They used to be expensive and difficult to install. However, over the past 10 years motorhome awnings became affordable, lighter and significantly easier to set up for any camper who prefers to take matters in his own hands as opposed to spending hundreds of dollars to have camping accessories added to his RV.

Most manufacturers came to understand that there was an increased need for practicality. That's why we see more and more lightweight retractable awnings these days. Less weight means less hassle with the installation, easy to use and less costs. 

Apparently the most significant benefit of a caravan awning is that you will gain plenty of extra space by the push of a button. Space is the most important issue all campers face, irrespectively of how big your motorhome is. Even the most luxurious and spacious RV can feel like a trap after a few days out on the road, especially if you have young kids travelling with you. Once you have a basic idea of what you want, visit a few camping equipment store and look at the different awnings 'in-person'. On the Internet, all things look different. Most importantly you will probably have a chance to try the product out and you will be able to ask all your questions. Further to that, especially during the off-season, a lot of stores have caravan porch awnings on sale for unbelievable bargains.

But again, I suggest that you have a solid understanding of what your requirements are before you go shopping for your awning. Space obviously is one of the key aspects but even more important is the compatibility of the awning with your vehicle. Even though most manufacturers claim that their products will fit any vehicle, the truth of the matter is that if you pick the 'wrong' model, you will have a major hassle once you're back home.  

Some of newer motorhomes these days usually come with an awning installed, however, even if you bought one without an awning it's not a big problem because all of the big suppliers such as Fiamma Awnings and Dorema Awnings, sell motorhome awning installation kits. They come in two main categories: manual awnings and motorised versions. Manual awnings are installed on the side of your vehicle. When you are ready to continue your trip, they can be easily rolled up and put away while you’re driving. Setting them up is just as easy: by pulling the attached support straps they awning is being released and basically opens up all the way by itself. The included support tracks not only make the whole structure more stable, but will also help you to adjust the position of the awning. Especially the bigger models might need some extra support tracks so that's a question you should keep in mind while shopping.

Alternatively and if your budget allows, you may want to consider a motorised retractable motorhome awning. Needless to point out that they are more convenient as they erect by themselves by just pushing a button on the included remote control. This is a huge advantage especially if you are facing bad weather conditions. Everybody who ever tried to set up a tent or awning in strong winds knows how difficult it is to hold all parts together before everything is in place. You won't have to worry about all that with a motorised awning.

Here is another important aspect: I would strongly recommend that you choose a model with a support mechanism made either of aluminum or stainless steel. The support mechanism is the heart of an awning and those types are much more resistant to corrosion and wear.

In summary:

• Go online and do some basic research on motorhome awnings and/or caravan porch awnings.
• Compatibility to your vehicle is the single most important factor.
• Know your space requirements and limitations.
• If your budget allows, go for a motorised retractable motorhome awning.
